Choosing The Perfect Contact Lenses

If you have an upcoming appointment with an eye doctor, you might be giving some thought as to whether contact lenses are the right choice for you.

Unlike traditional eyeglasses, factors including the shape, color, style, and materials used to make your glasses aren't as much of a concern. However, if thinking about contacts, you will be confronted with choosing from several different types of lenses available on the market today.

Extended Or Daily Wear Contacts - These days, contact lens wearers can choose from either daily or extended wear lenses. Both types offer distinct advantages and disadvantages. Daily wear contacts help to reduce infection risks since you only wear them once. You won't have to clean them because you throw them away after wearing them once. The most significant disadvantage of daily wear contacts is they are more expensive.

More price-conscious people might prefer extended wear lenses. Extended wear contacts usually allow you to wear them for a week, two weeks, or even a month.

You should never wear them longer than the recommended prescription. For instance, if you have daily lenses, avoid wearing them as if they are extended wear. The reason not to do this is that they can collect dangerous bacteria that may result in an eye infection.

If you tend to be forgetful, extended-wear contacts could be a better option for you, as these contacts are safer for overnight or longer wear times.

Soft Or Hard Contact Lenses - Another consideration when choosing contact lenses is whether to select a hard contact or a soft contact. Soft contacts use silicone hydrogels, while hard contacts use plastic. Luckily, both materials allow oxygen to reach the eye's surface. Generally, soft lenses are more comfortable and don't slide as much as hard contacts.

However, they aren't as effective at treating all vision problems when compared to hard contacts.

Another advantage of selecting hard contact lenses is they are easier to clean and put on. They are more durable, and are smaller than soft lenses, covering less of your eye.

Other Considerations - If you've always wanted to experiment with your appearance, colored or tinted lenses offer you the chance to enhance or completely change the color of your eyes. Tinted contacts can be quite fun, so long as your eye doctor clears you for them. People with astigmatism or other vision problems may have limited options due to their prescriptions, so, unfortunately, they may not be for everyone.
